A good handbag is the one you reach for every day. Start with how you will use it, then look at size, leather and details. This guide walks you through each choice.

Picture a normal week. The bag you need for the office is not the bag you need for an evening out or a weekend away.
- Every day and work: a tote or a structured top-handle bag that fits a phone, wallet, keys and a small tablet.
- Hands-free days: a shoulder or cross-body bag with an adjustable strap.
- Evenings and occasions: a clutch or a small chain-strap bag that holds a phone, a card holder and a lipstick.
- Travel: a larger tote or a weekender with a zip top, so nothing falls out in transit.
Size, shape and strap
- Empty your current bag and check what you actually carry. Choose the smallest size that holds it comfortably.
- Structured bags keep their shape and look polished. Soft, slouchy bags are lighter and more relaxed.
- Check the strap drop (the distance from the top of the strap to the bag). It decides whether the bag sits under your arm or on your hip.
- Hold the bag empty, then imagine it full. A heavy bag gets heavier by the end of the day.
Leather and materials

- Grained calfskin (pebbled or textured): resists scratches and everyday wear. A good choice for a bag you use daily.

- Suede and light colours: beautiful, but they mark easily. Keep them for dry days and careful use.
Look at the details too: even, straight stitching, smooth edge paint, a lining that is fixed neatly, and hardware that feels solid and opens without catching.
Colour
For a first designer bag, black, tan, taupe or navy go with most wardrobes. A colour you already wear often is a safer choice than a trend colour. Gold hardware looks warmer; silver or palladium hardware looks cooler.
Checks before you buy
- Buy from a seller who tells you where pieces come from and how they are checked.
